About Us
Now one of the major suburbs of Cork City,
from which it lies 5km to the south east, Douglas takes its
name from the Gaelic Dubh Glais or Dark Stream. It has a population
of around 20,000 people.
From the early 1700's onwards it established itself as the
home of the sail cloth and rope Industry and several mills
including Donnybrook Mills, St Patricks Woollen Mills and
Conroy's Rope and Twine mills operated here, providing much
employment and attracting skilled workers from far afield.
Barry's Bar which stands in a prominent location right at
the heart of the old Douglas Village has been a public house
since 1776. In later years, Barry’s became known as
the Tramway House because of the stopovers made there by trams
on their way to Cork City.
It was bought by the current owner Peter Collins in 1994
and has been through 2 major renovations in recent years.
The first in 1996 and the other in 2003 when the entire premises
was rebuilt to a total of over 12,000 sq. feet with a contemporary
and comfortable interior.
The warm, understated elegance of the recently transformed
Barrys, sits very comfortably in its Cork suburb of Douglas.
From its contemporary exterior incorporating both modern and
traditional materials, to its bright split level interior
with double height volume accommodating nearly 850 people,
the Barry's of Douglas environment is fresh and bold, while
including many cosy and subdued areas.
